How To Become An Umpire

The Leinster Hockey Umpire’s Association has laid out below the recruitment process to becoming an umpire. It is the same path that Ray O’Connor followed along with top current umpires Carol Metchette, Geoff Conn, Graham Caulwell and Kieran Bolger leading to them travelling around the world, getting to see the action at its closest.

Those looking to get involved or seeking information should contact us here.

To want to become an LHUA umpire you should have some experience at underage umpiring and with any luck already be umpiring within your club on a regular basis. What we can offer is more fulfilling neutral appointments away from your own club.

We’ll try to get you involved and participating with either our Academy sessions or LHUA training meetings that happen throughout the season. From there, the LHUA appoint to appropriate fixtures with senior umpires to partner you at an early stage with mentoring also available. We can supply you with umpiring shirts, jacket, cards and whistles.

Grading forms are completed throughout the season and a post game debrief is encouraged. The LHUA also use headsets to assist and develop umpires.

The LHUA has three grades (3 – Foundation, 2 – Intermediate, 1 – Senior) that umpires can progress through based on reports and gradings. Currently Grades 1 and 2 officiate weekly in the Leinster Senior League.

Remember hockey cant take place without the umpires and strangely enough it can be fun to be involved!!
